The unconditional way of enjoying yourself.
“People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”
― Carl Jung
If there is an aspect the Irish can excel at it’s sometimes superficial.
When we are in denial – trying to pretend not to be overstretched. That air of keeping up with the Joneses – whoever they were?
What will the neighbours think?
It’s like during the pando everyone did home improvements – mostly to the outside of the houses. Not the living space inside. The outside. The face to the world. I could understand the inside. Where they suddenly found themselves trapped – 24/7.
It’s a very evident truth on a night out. The too much drink. The too loud a laugh. The crass jokes to take yeh out. Are we being noticed?
The social media dump. I was one of the chosen Swifties. Not.
My favourite image of the Taylor Swift weekend – was the guards playing tennis with the locals on the closed road. The barrier made the net. Ireland does Wimbledon. This is my Irish.
Last weekend was one of those weekends with so much on – It had that vibe of the whole country is having a great time. Aren’t you? And I always wonder who was? Who has pushed themselves to the limit to be there? Does that gnawing leave you? Do you drink too much to forget? Just go along with the crowd? Hope you will wake in a new reality in the morning. And still, find what you were trying to escape from.
It takes a lot to sit with your own soul sober. Drug-free. Which is maybe why so few choose to do this now.
What happened to the simple chats? Nights out where you didn’t feel drowned in unnatural highs. The loud din of soul avoidance. The anti-social waves of selfies and clips. The places you felt heard from real.
The lack of need to be tanked before you arrived.
