My dream is that I’ll never have to use a label to introduce myself. I use my dyslexia as a disclaimer for my mistakes so you will not judge me before you know my ability. To escape the assumptions of intellect, ability and competence.
I use it to attract others to help overcome what I have myself. I got a 1st in my degree in Marine Science despite my dyslexia. And then went on to get my Doctorate in Physical Oceanography. I always saw education as a means to an end. To get to the highest level of understanding but also the place where others would realise what is possible. I picked the areas of science and maths which I had always been good at since a young child to take me there. But my aim has always been for it to be easier for others to achieve what I have – it hasn’t always been an easy road for me.
I started out with the simple aim to take literacy and intelligence out of the same sentence. I’m starting to see humanity spiralling so that this becomes a bigger issue for equality than I ever knew.
There is a balance for me in helping those through the system now. And leaving a legacy of change behind for the future. This is why I have numerous projects. One project is not capable of this balance. I’m constantly in a place of learning myself and I only move on when I feel I’ve stopped learning. This is why since I started my school, The Homework Club, in 2009 I have worked in the business, sports and various other worlds. But I’ve always passionately cared about education and literacy. These were just learning experiences to understand people and their motivations better.
Those individuals I help to achieve in education today keep me going for what I envisage as possible for everyone in the future. I learn as much from their experiences as they learn from me. If you stop working with the individual you risk losing sight of what matters most.
Personality Theory is just a tool for me to ground difference and understanding. It’s a very palatable tool for others as it shows our relationship to others while also showing us the possibility of our own strengths. It’s a way to build others with core understanding from the inside out. And it’s only when we have achieved for ourselves that we are able to care about those external to us and have a better humanity. I started out caring about success but now I realise I care about secureness. These are where the real possibilities lie.
